Camera2Cook Launches This September: Turning the Food You Have into Healthier Meal Ideas

This September, we’re excited to officially launch Camera2Cook - our new AI-powered food and recipe app designed to help people turn the ingredients they already have at home into healthier, practical and less wasteful meal ideas.

Led by Healthbox CIC, Camera2Cook has been developed in partnership with Coax Creative and the University of Chester, and Canterbury Christ Church University, with support and funding from Innovate UK. The project has also been shaped by dietitians, nutritionists, researchers and, importantly, real users. Together, we’ve combined community health experience, nutrition expertise, academic research and digital innovation to create an app designed around the realities of everyday life.

After months of development, research, testing and refinement, we’re incredibly excited that Camera2Cook will be available this month.

What is Camera2Cook?

Camera2Cook is built around a very simple question:

“What can I make with this?”

Instead of searching through recipes and then buying a long list of ingredients, Camera2Cook starts with the food you already have.

Simply take a photo of your ingredients and the app uses AI to identify what’s available and generate personalised recipe ideas. It can help you make use of food sitting in the fridge or cupboard, discover something new to cook and make healthier eating feel more achievable.

The aim is to help people eat well, save money, reduce food waste and feel more confident cooking at home.

Healthy eating designed around you

We know that healthy eating isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Our diets are influenced by our culture, budget, health, cooking ability, available equipment, dietary requirements and personal preferences. Camera2Cook has therefore been designed to provide a much more personalised experience than a traditional recipe library.

Users can tailor their experience around dietary preferences and requirements, health-focused goals, cultural and culinary preferences and the cooking facilities and equipment they have available.

Camera2Cook also includes multiple language options and read-aloud functionality, helping us make the app more accessible to a wider range of people and communities.

For those looking to understand more about food and nutrition, recipes include nutrition information and healthier eating prompts. A built-in cooking glossary also explains common cooking methods and techniques through straightforward language, images and practical guidance.

It’s not just about finding something for tea. We want Camera2Cook to help people gradually build their food skills, health literacy and confidence in the kitchen.

AI-powered, with nutrition expertise at its core

Camera2Cook uses innovative AI technology, but nutrition has remained at the heart of the project throughout its development.

Unlike a fixed recipe library, Camera2Cook dynamically generates meal ideas based on the foods available to the individual. Its nutritional calculations are supported by recognised UK food composition data, helping align the technology with established nutritional guidance.

We have also incorporated dietetic and nutritional expertise throughout the development and testing process.

Hannah Pritchard, HCPC Registered Dietitian and Researcher

Hannah Pritchard, HCPC Registered Dietitian and Researcher, has supported Camera2Cook with nutritional analysis and validation, evidence-based nutrition content and the development and refinement of the app’s nutrition-related features.

Alongside this specialist input, academic expertise and feedback from real users have helped us continually refine how Camera2Cook communicates nutrition information and supports everyday food choices.

From Innovate UK funding to a new app

INNOVATE UK

Camera2Cook has been made possible with funding through Innovate UK’s national programme supporting community-led health innovation.

Healthbox CIC was selected as part of Innovate UK’s £2.5 million investment into scaling innovative approaches to improving health outcomes across the UK.

The project brings together the strengths of several partners. Healthbox CIC brings extensive experience in community health, healthy cookery and nutrition education; Coax Creative brings digital design, development and user-centred expertise; and the University of Chester brings academic research and evaluation expertise, supporting the project’s real-world impact, cultural inclusivity and nutritional integrity.

This collaboration has allowed us to explore how artificial intelligence, behavioural science, nutrition and community insight can come together to address real challenges around diet, food skills, affordability and health inequalities.

Making more from what you already have

For many households, deciding what to cook isn’t about finding the perfect recipe. It’s about looking in the fridge at 5pm and trying to work out what can actually be made with what’s there.

That’s where we want Camera2Cook to help.

It could be vegetables that need using before they go to waste, a few ingredients left in the cupboard before payday or simply a night when you’ve run out of ideas.

By starting with the food people already have, Camera2Cook can help households reduce food waste, make food budgets stretch further and discover healthier ways to use everyday ingredients.

Camera2Cook is launching this September

Since 2011, Healthbox CIC has worked with children, families and communities to help people eat well, move more and feel better. Camera2Cook represents an exciting next step, taking our experience in nutrition education, healthy cookery and community wellbeing into the digital world.

And now, after months of hard work with our partners, we’re almost ready to put Camera2Cook into people’s hands.

Users will be able to get started with a free version of Camera2Cook, with the option to upgrade for £4.99 per month to access the full range of features and greater personalisation.

We’re looking forward to seeing how people use Camera2Cook in their own kitchens and, most importantly, what they make.

Snap your ingredients. Discover what you can make. Eat well, waste less.
