Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, leaving you feeling isolated and weighed down by emotions that seem too heavy to carry alone. These feelings can affect your daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. Recognising when you might benefit from counselling is an important step toward finding relief and support. This post explores the signs that indicate it might be time to seek help.

Feeling Lonely Even When Surrounded by People
Loneliness is more than just being alone. You might be constantly around family or friends and still feel disconnected. This emotional loneliness can be a sign that you need support. When loneliness persists, it can lead to feelings of sadness, anxiety, or even depression.
You find it hard to open up to friends or family.
You feel misunderstood or isolated despite social interactions.
You avoid social situations because they feel draining or unfulfilling.
If these feelings sound familiar, talking to a counsellor can help you explore these emotions and develop strategies to build meaningful connections.
Overwhelm That Affects Your Daily Life
Everyone experiences stress, but when stress becomes constant and overwhelming, it can interfere with your ability to function. Signs that overwhelm is taking over include:
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions.
Feeling exhausted even after rest.
Avoiding responsibilities or procrastinating.
Experiencing physical symptoms like headaches or stomach issues.
Low cost therapy offers a way to manage these feelings without the financial burden that sometimes prevents people from seeking help. Affordable counselling services provide practical tools to cope with stress and regain control.
Struggling to Manage Emotions: Signs you may benefit from counselling
If you find your emotions are intense, unpredictable, or difficult to manage, counselling can provide a safe space to understand and regulate these feelings. This might look like:
Frequent mood swings.
Feeling numb or disconnected from your emotions.
Reacting strongly to small triggers.
Difficulty expressing how you feel.
Counsellors can teach techniques like mindfulness, emotional regulation, and communication skills that improve emotional health.
Experiencing Changes in Sleep or Appetite
Changes in sleep patterns or appetite often signal emotional distress. You might notice:
Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.
Sleeping too much or feeling constantly tired.
Loss of appetite or overeating.
Weight changes without a clear reason.
These symptoms can be linked to anxiety, depression, or stress and are signs that you might benefit from counselling to help address the root causes and improve your overall health.
Feeling Stuck or Hopeless
When life feels like it’s at a standstill, and you can’t see a way forward, it’s a strong indicator that support is needed. Signs include:
Lack of motivation or interest in activities you once enjoyed.
Persistent negative thoughts about yourself or your future.
Feeling hopeless or helpless.
Counselling offers a chance to explore these feelings and find new perspectives and hope.
Reaching out for support when you're feeling lonely
Taking the first step toward counselling can be daunting, especially if cost is a concern. Towards the end of last year, after 8 years of supporting clients through council and NHS funded contracts we have launched a new low cost therapy service developed to remove the cost barrier from accessing support when it's needed. This service is available to anyone over 18 years of age in the UK and is delivered via phonecall or video call for just £25 a session.
We offer daytime and evening appointments with our team of trainee, volunteer and Healthbox counsellors. You can now also book a counselling assessment at a time to suit you directly from our website to discuss your needs and find the right support.
Affordable counselling does not mean lower quality. Many skilled therapists offer services at reduced rates to make mental health support accessible. When you start counselling, expect:
A confidential and non-judgmental environment.
An initial assessment to understand your situation.
Collaborative goal setting to focus on what matters most to you.
Practical strategies to manage loneliness, overwhelm, and emotional challenges.
Getting support will fund support for others
As we are a not for profit, any profits made from your £25 per session investment will be re-invested into our other community services such as children's mental health services, groups, events, workshops and more. So by accessing out service, you're not only receiving the support you need, but you're helping to fund support for others too.
Taking the Next Step
Reaching out for help can be life-changing and that's why we set up this affordable counselling service, to help provide a way to get support without financial strain.
