Men's Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 (Matesinmind) is an important opportunity to shine a light on the challenges many men face but don't always talk about. While conversations around mental health have improved in recent years, many men still struggle in silence, often feeling pressure to cope alone or hide how they are feeling from others.

Mental health challenges can affect anyone at any stage of life. Whether it's stress, anxiety, low mood, loneliness, relationship difficulties, grief or a major life change, it's important to remember that you don't have to manage everything by yourself.
Many people start looking for support after searching questions online such as:
How do I stop feeling lonely?
How do you know if you're depressed?
What are the signs you have depression?
How do I start healing from heartbreak?
What are some things to do every day for mental health?
While these are common questions, they can sometimes be a sign that something deeper is going on. If you find yourself regularly searching for answers, feeling overwhelmed, disconnected from others, or struggling to cope with everyday life, it may be worth talking to someone about how you're feeling.
The hidden impact of loneliness
Loneliness is something many men experience but rarely discuss. You can be surrounded by people and still feel isolated, disconnected or unsupported. Changes such as retirement, relationship breakdowns, becoming a parent, losing a loved one, unemployment or moving to a new area can all contribute to feelings of loneliness.
Often, men tell themselves they should be able to "get on with it" or that other people have it worse. However, loneliness can have a significant impact on both mental and physical wellbeing, affecting confidence, motivation, sleep, relationships and overall quality of life.
If feelings of loneliness are lasting for weeks or months, or are beginning to affect your daily life, speaking to a counsellor can provide a safe and confidential space to explore what's happening and identify ways forward.
Recognising when you might need support
Mental health difficulties don't always look the way people expect them to. While some people experience persistent sadness, others may notice changes such as:
Feeling irritable or frustrated more often
Losing interest in activities they once enjoyed
Struggling to concentrate
Feeling constantly tired
Withdrawing from family and friends
Feeling hopeless or stuck
Finding it difficult to cope with everyday pressures
Many men worry that seeking support is a sign of weakness. In reality, recognising when you need support and taking steps to look after your wellbeing is a sign of strength.
You don't need to reach crisis point
One of the biggest misconceptions about counselling is that you need to be in crisis before you can access support. The truth is that many people benefit from talking things through before problems become overwhelming.
Whether you're dealing with stress at work, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, loneliness, anxiety or simply feeling that something isn't quite right, counselling can provide an opportunity to reflect, gain perspective and feel heard.
You don't need to have all the answers before reaching out.
