What is Active Travel?

Our Active Travel Project aims to encourage members of the Ellesmere Port community to utilise active methods of transportation…
This covers any method of physical activity including walking, cycling, running and even wheeling! Active travel has been gaining popularity in recent years as people are becoming more aware of the benefits it brings, both to the individual and the environment. We are excited to host many interactive events and opportunities across Ellesmere Port for all ages and abilities!
What are the benefits?

IMPROVED PHYSICAL HEALTH AND FITNESS
Active travel promotes physical activity, which is essential for good health and well-being. Regular physical activity can reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, as well as improving mental health and overall quality of life.
REDUCED STRESS, IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH & BUILD A RELATIONSHIPS
Active travel can create a sense of community, improve social interactions and have a beneficial impact on mental health, as people are more likely to interact with others while walking or cycling. It can also improve accessibility and connectivity across Ellesmere Port.
IMPROVED AIR QUALITY AND REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Active travel is a more environmentally friendly mode of transportation compared to driving a car or taking public transportation. It reduces air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change, and helps to reduce traffic congestion and noise pollution on your local roads you can even take your bike on the Mersey Rail for free (click here to find out more).
USING LESS FUEL CAN SAVE COSTS
Active travel can be a more cost-effective mode of transportation, particularly for short trips. Walking and cycling require no fuel costs. We are here to offer you guidance and support if you do not already own your own bike, but you would like to participate in the Active Travel programme.
