Work Experience at Healthbox CIC

Updated: 1 day ago

Hear from Whitby High student Jessica about her week of work experience with the Healthbox team!

"Hi, I'm Jess and I am here at Healthbox on a one-week work experience placement. I’m a Sixth form student at the Whitby High School and I am currently studying Food and Nutrition, Health and Social Care and Applied Science. I absolutely love to cook, and I am passionate about pursuing a career in Nutrition and Food Science.

Day 1:

Today I was warmly welcomed by all the lovely staff here at Healthbox. This morning, I was lucky enough to accompany Claire (who is one of the fantastic Healthbox Social Prescribers who helped me throughout the day) on a visit to Tarporley. I joined in on a ‘walk with a doc’ where we had a relaxing walk and met some really friendly people. The Doc talked us through some of the myths surrounding alcohol use which I found very interesting. It was great to meet such a kind and friendly bunch of people.

I spent the afternoon with the amazing Sarah and Georgie (who looked after me throughout the week) at Upton Westlea Primary School. I observed Year 6 completing week 2 of their ‘Skills to go Big’ Project. I was so impressed to see such young pupils demonstrate a thorough understanding of a healthy, balanced diet. The session ended with Year 6 making some adorable Positive affirmation keychains. Thank you for having me Year 6, it was lovely to meet you all.

Day 2:

During day 2 I researched healthy snacks for teens. I put together my 3 favourite recipes which are gluten free Hummus and flatbread, Greek yoghurt granola bowls and Honey flapjacks.

In the afternoon I put together some boxes for the home first project. These are fantastic free giveaways with a collection of helpful booklets jammed with tips, created by Jeorgia. The boxes even include a resistant band so you can get stuck into a workout in the comfort of your own home, just follow the directions on the handy guide.

Day 3:

I had a really enjoyable time at the wellbeing walk in Tattenhall park. This wellbeing walk runs every Wednesday, and the quiz runs once a month. Everyone who attends this walk are all kind, friendly and chatty. Charlotte and Rachel (who organised this event and helped me throughout the day) are incredible people and I would encourage anyone in the area to take part as they would have a fabulous time.

In the afternoon I put together a visual presentation to aid understanding of the sugar content of well-known food and drinks. Ensure you look out for these amazing oral health sessions Sarah will be doing.

To end the day, I made Vegan brownies at Healthbox. I was in my element making these and they smelt delicious. We all taste tested these, and we were all satisfied with the results.

Day 4:

I started off my day by going to a Buggy fit session in Whitby Park with Simon and his daughter. It was lovely to see lots of mums and their babies attend this class. It was nice to have some fresh air and meet new people.

In the afternoon I visited Tattenhall Park Primary School. Sarah and Lianne taught Week 1 of the ‘Skills to go Big’ Project. They learnt about physical signs that show us when we feel nervous and stressed. It was a really good and informative session.

Day 5:

Today is my last day at Healthbox so Claire took me to the Neuro Therapy Centre health and wellbeing Open day, so we had an insight into what services they offer e.g., counselling, oxygen therapy, physiotherapy etc. Claire is a Social Prescribing Coordinator at Healthbox so she can help and connect patients to these services to ensure their wider needs are met. It was lovely to have a better understanding of what this amazing service does for people as they help manage a wide variety of neurological conditions e.g., Parkinson’s. It was lovely to visit this fantastic organisation with Claire.

I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone in the Healthbox team. From the moment I started I was made to feel very welcome. The team have offered me so many wonderful opportunities and I have thoroughly enjoyed my work experience. I’ve had a really interesting and varied timetable of activities that has given me a brilliant insight into working in the healthcare sector. I would encourage everyone to get involved in these fun and informative activities as soon as possible. Healthbox really is the friendliest team of people who will make improving your lifestyle easy and fun."
