As a student at the University of Chester studying human nutrition I was thrilled to be offered a 5-week placement at Healthbox along with three other students. I was the given the opportunity to be involved with lots of projects such as The Wellbeing High Street, vegetarianism in pregnancy, falls prevention, helping to coordinate our meeting places family fun day and much more. I would like to say a big thank you to the team at Healthbox for all the help and support they have offered along the way.
On my first week of placement we were invited to Trafford Hall’s ‘Think tank’ a community housing event. Whereby myself and another staff member had the privilege of talking to residents and frontline staff health champions in social housing about healthy eating on a budget, wellbeing and mental health. We also got involved with networking new innovative ideas for improving health and wellbeing which I found really interesting.
During national vegetarian week 15-21st May 2017, we put on a work shop at the One to One midwives center at Ellesmere Port. The vegetarianism in pregnancy project really gave me an insight to the benefits of vegetarianism not only in pregnancy but in general. As a group, we put together really tasty and simple vegetarian recipes with plenty of nutrients essential for a healthy pregnancy.
During the workshop, we outlined all the benefits of vegetarianism in regards to cost, environment and nutrition, following this we got stuck into a really fun cookery session that everyone got involved in. Helping to coordinate the meeting places family fun day was an enjoyable and rewarding experience. We were able to go out in the community, engage with families and get them on board with the project and really put our own ideas into action. The fun day went brilliantly we had a fantastic turn out, the families enjoyed lots of games, crafts, hoola hooping, and smoothie bikes. This was topped with a healthy lunch consisting of lots of fruit, vegetables and salad, making their own healthy sandwiches and baked potatoes with a choice of toppings.
I found my experiences truly valuable to my studies and throughout my placement, I have learnt a great deal about working in public health and the positive impact that the projects have on families, the projects that run really bring everyone together as a community. Working with Healthbox has been a fantastic opportunity for first-hand experience in nutrition and working with the general public to promote healthy lifestyles. I will take away with me valuable skills that I will use not only through my future career but my day to day life.
A big thank you to Jade for all of her work at Healthbox CIC! If you would like to get involved with what we do, visit out volunteering information page here.
